“It was his girlfriend’s birthday and he had worked on it for two months,” said his older brother, Alim. “He was super excited about it. He wanted it to be very special.”

And it was.

Until he and his friends came across Robert Cada and his friends on the docks at about 9 p.m. Monday just outside the Cabana Waterfront Patio. It went from a great day to a deadly one.

“He had actually rented a boat and had just pulled up to the dock there and was never in the Rebel nightclub or Cabana,” said Alim.

But he came upon what appeared to be a conflict between bar staff and some unruly patrons who were being escorted out. Harsh words were spoken and suddenly the newcomers were involved in a dispute. Cabana declined comment due to the police investigation.

“It escalated quickly but settled down and they thought it was over,” said Alim.

The main participant had left the dock and Jamil, Lily and another couple were heading towards their vehicle when, Alim said, out of nowhere a truck revved up behind them and struck Jamil and his friend, narrowly missing Lily.

“It was a surprise,” said Alim, who quickly headed to the scene once getting a call from Lily.

When the dust settled, Jamil was “crushed” to death and his friend suffered rib and leg damage, according to the brother. The truck took off.

The suspect identified by police was on the run for two days before he surrendered to police and was held on charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder. Cada was expected to appear in court Thursday and is considered innocent until proven guilty.

This investigation is still very much underway and further charges or upgrades are possible. No matter what happens, none of it will bring back Jamil, who was “bigger than life” and “the heart and soul of our family.”

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

At just 25, he was the baby. He had an older sister and brother Alim, who is 39.

“He was a very good kid,” said Alim. “He had big dreams.”

One of those was to marry Lily and have a family.

“They had just had dinner with my parents where they talked about that,” he said.

Instead, they are planning a funeral for Tuesday â€" one which because of COVID-19 restrictions will not be able to hold the number of people who want to attend to pay respect to this popular Uxbridge man and his much-loved family.

“They are still in shock,” Alim said of his mom and dad, who came to Canada from Kenya in the 1980s and had been living the Canadian dream.

“Life was good,” he said.

It is now a nightmare where they have to bury their son apparently over something so ridiculous.

“It’s such a waste,” said Alim.

It’s especially galling when you consider accused Cada was already within the justice system stemming from drug and guns charges last year in London, Ont. He was also a target in the 2012 Eaton Centre shooting â€" something that happened on the very day he was released from jail.

Jamil, on the other hand, worked 12 hours a day at the family’s Mucho Burrito franchise in Whitby and also at their Orange Theory Fitness gym.

“Everybody knew him and loved him,” said Alim. “He was the front face of that Mucho Burrito. He had such charisma.”

  • Also planning to study for his real estate licence, he had his whole life ahead of him. Just like that, it’s over.

“It’s so crazy,” said Alim. “It’s just so senseless.”
