Eco-boost for 45m library and health hub in Bolton
EXTRA funding has been approved to improve the outlook of an under-construction £4.5m library and health centre for Little Lever.
Work is well underway on the project to replace the 40-year-old existing surgery on Mytham Road and the library in Coronation Square.
Part of the planning conditions for the development required the borough council to undertake a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating.
And this has resulted in a series of carbon reduction measures being suggested, including installing solar panels and maximising air quality and energy efficiency within the building.
Electric car charging points could also be incorporated into the overall scheme, councillors have been told.
Paul Whittingham, the council's assistant director of economic development and regeneration, in a report, said: "The additional capital had been identified within District Centre Funds and the financial outlay met the principles of this fund in providing new and inspiring building for the public to use and staff to work in."
Another survey has also been conducted on the proposed exterior of the new library and health centre.
Mr Whittingham said that providing an additional £30,000 would "address the unsightly row of original flags and security bollards that are outside the boundary of the construction site.
" This will aesthetically improve appearance outside the exemplar Hub and addresses maintenance and trip hazard risks via an additional row of paving (of) circa 30 square metres," he added.
"This would include renewal of paving in keeping with the new site landscape."
Cllr Martyn Cox, deputy council leader and cabinet member for regeneration, approved the release of monies from the Districts Fund for both sets of upgrades.
The Borough Solicitor has been authorised to take care of the necessary legal formalities involved.
