Mount Merapi erupts spewing hot ash and gas into the air as lava oozes down its slopes
Mount Merapi has erupted, spewing clouds of hot ash and gas into the air as lava seeps down its slopes.
The Indonesian volcano unleashed debris and rocks on its side this morning at local time.
The volcano is the country's most volatile one and its activity has increased in the past weeks.
Clouds of hot ash have been spat out at least seven times since Sunday morning, as well as a series of fast-moving rock, debris, lava and gasses, according to Yogyakarta’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center.
Lava has been seeping from the crater rapidly before collapsing.
Mount Merapi is on the densely populated island of Java as villages and nearby towns have been blanketed by ash.

The volcano's last major eruption was in 2010 when 347 people died.
People living on the slopes were told to stay at least five kilometres away from the crater’s mouth, Indonesia’s Geology and Volcanology Research Agency said.
The eruption started at around 5am local time yesterday.
The latest eruption sent hot ash a kilometre into the sky and clouds of gas up to three kilometres down its slopes.
No casualties have been reported.
